about

An intercontinental quartet of improvisers, under the name of the Polish vocalist Elma Kais, has released an album of wordless musical poetry - ELMA "Licentia Poetica" (Hevhetia 2022).

"Licentia Poetica" is an improvised suite, created by:
Elma Kais (voice, hurdy-gurdy, electronics)
Knox Chandler (electric guitar, electronics)
Daigo Nakai (bass guitar)
Klaus Kugel (drums and percussion)

The album presents a collection of pieces inspired by verses of ancient poetry by Ovid, enchanting with a magical atmosphere of impressive vocal lines, imaginative electronic fields and soaring, colourful rhythmics.

Press quotes:

„A suite by a unique ensemble comprising a stellar vocalist and unconventional electric guitarist, an exploratory bassist and masterful drummer [...] who have based their careers if not their lives on honing personal skills enabling them to conjure endless possibilities from their sounds. Elma’s syllabic fluidity, her propulsive rush of all manner of utterances which her colleagues feed and around which they swirl, informs a coherent, cohesive, story-like audio experience. Together the band evokes a breadth of responses, arising from the continuous twists they give to listeners' expectations or subjectively imagined plots. Taking full advantage of poetic license, Kais, Kugel, Chandler and Nakai conjure music that's both unpredictable and inevitable.”
/Howard Mandel, President of the Jazz Journalists Association, excerpts from the liner notes essay/

””Licentia Poetica” is the perfect mix of individuals with their distinctive ways of playing, coming together to create something magical, ethereal, atmospheric, and glorious in its concept and delivery. This album is primal, mysterious, and an absolute joy. Listening to this, it feels like you are part of it, at one with the music because elements of it speak to us all.”
/Sammy Stein, The Free Jazz Collective - Free Jazz Blog/

"Considering the fact that Elma practically reinvents the approach to vocal improvisation, throwing away all pre-conceptions and limitations, she is able to cross into uncharted territory. This is a shockingly beautiful, upliftiing musical experience, which happens extremely rarely. As pompous as this might sound, this is probably the most perfect Polish Jazz vocal album of all times, a creation of unprecedented courage, inventiveness and free-spirited exploration.”
/Adam Baruch, The Soundtrack of My Life/

"The music drew me in and hypnotized me immediately. Everything here harmonizes and connects perfectly. Outstanding music and a wonderful accompanying setting.”
/Krzysztof Komorek, Jazz Suite / Jazz Valley/
